Introduction
Choosing between IP and HD-TVI (analog HD) cameras is one of the first decisions you will face when setting up a surveillance system. Both technologies deliver high-definition video, but they differ significantly in architecture, scalability, and long-term cost.
How IP Cameras Work
IP cameras digitise video at the camera itself and transmit data over a standard Ethernet network. Each camera has its own IP address, meaning you can access it individually from anywhere on the LAN or internet. Most modern IP cameras support Power over Ethernet (PoE), so a single cable carries both data and power.
How HD-TVI (Analog HD) Cameras Work
HD-TVI cameras send an analog high-definition signal over coaxial cable to a DVR. The DVR digitises and stores the footage. Because the signal is analog, latency is virtually zero, and existing coax infrastructure from older CCTV systems can often be reused.
Key Differences at a Glance
| Feature | IP Camera | HD-TVI Camera |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Up to 32 MP | Up to 8 MP |
| Cabling | Cat 5e/6 Ethernet | Coaxial (RG59/RG6) |
| Max Cable Run | 100 m (extendable with switches) | 500 m |
| Power | PoE (single cable) | Separate power supply |
| Scalability | Highly scalable via network | Limited by DVR ports |
| Analytics | On-board AI / edge analytics | Limited (DVR-based) |
When to Choose IP
Go with IP cameras if you need resolutions above 5 MP, plan to expand the system over time, want on-board analytics like AcuSense smart detection, or prefer a single-cable PoE setup. IP is the standard for new commercial and enterprise installations.
When to Choose HD-TVI
HD-TVI makes sense when you are upgrading an older analog system and want to reuse existing coaxial cabling, your project budget is tight, or the installation site already has a DVR infrastructure in place. It remains a reliable and cost-effective option for smaller setups.
FastEgy Recommendation
For most new projects in Egypt, we recommend IP cameras paired with Hikvision NVRs for their flexibility, image quality, and smart features. If you are retrofitting an existing coax installation, Hikvision’s HD-TVI range delivers excellent value. Contact FastEgy for a free site assessment and quotation.
