Introduction
Even the best CCTV systems encounter issues over time. Knowing how to identify and fix common problems saves time, reduces downtime, and avoids unnecessary service calls. Here are the ten most frequent issues and their solutions.
1. No Image or Black Screen
Check the power supply (PoE cable or adapter). Verify the cable connection at both ends. Try a different port on the NVR or switch. If the camera’s IR LEDs glow faintly in the dark, the camera has power—the issue is likely the cable or port.
2. Blurry or Out-of-Focus Image
Clean the lens with a soft cloth. For varifocal cameras, adjust the focus via the NVR’s remote focus feature. Dome cameras may have a loose lens ring—tighten it. Environmental factors like condensation inside the dome housing also cause blur.
3. IR Reflection or White Glow at Night
IR light reflecting off nearby surfaces (walls, glass, spider webs) creates a white haze. Reposition the camera away from reflective surfaces. Clean spider webs from the lens. For dome cameras, ensure the foam ring between the lens and dome glass is properly seated.
4. Intermittent Connection or Camera Going Offline
Check the Ethernet cable for damage or loose connectors. Test with a known-good cable. Verify the PoE switch has sufficient power budget. If the issue occurs during heavy rain, water may be entering an outdoor connector—use weatherproof junction boxes.
5. NVR Not Recording
Ensure the hard drive is installed and detected by the NVR (check in Storage Management). Verify the recording schedule is configured correctly. Check for HDD errors—if the drive is failing, replace it with a new surveillance-rated HDD.
6. Poor Night Vision Quality
Ensure IR LEDs are functioning. Clean the lens. Check that the camera’s day/night switch mode is set to Auto. If the scene is still too dark, consider upgrading to a ColorVu or DarkFighter model for superior low-light performance.
7. Cannot Access Cameras Remotely
Verify the NVR has internet connectivity. Check that Hik-Connect P2P is enabled in the NVR settings. Ensure the Hik-Connect app is logged in with the correct account and the device is bound to it. Restart the NVR if the connection was recently lost.
8. Time and Date Incorrect
Incorrect timestamps make footage useless for investigations. Set the NVR to sync with an NTP server automatically. Verify the correct time zone (GMT+2 for Egypt). After a power outage, check that the time has resynchronised.
