Introduction
Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that delivers electrical power alongside data through a single Ethernet cable. For CCTV installations, PoE eliminates the need for separate power supplies at each camera location, simplifying wiring and reducing installation costs.
How PoE Works
A PoE switch or PoE NVR injects low-voltage DC power into the Ethernet cable. The camera at the other end extracts the power it needs. Standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af) provides up to 15.4 W per port, while PoE+ (802.3at) delivers up to 30 W for power-hungry devices like PTZ cameras and heaters.
Benefits for CCTV
Single-cable installation reduces material and labour costs. Centralised power management from the switch room simplifies maintenance. Remote PoE port cycling lets you reboot a frozen camera without visiting the site. Cameras can be placed anywhere an Ethernet cable can reach—up to 100 m, or further with extenders.
PoE Budgeting
Every PoE switch or NVR has a total power budget in watts. Add up the power consumption of all connected cameras and ensure the total stays within the switch’s budget. Leave 20% headroom for safety. For example, eight 12 W cameras need at least 96 W—choose a switch rated for 120 W or more.
PoE Extenders and Long Runs
Standard Ethernet supports 100 m. For longer runs—common in warehouses and outdoor sites—use PoE extenders to double or triple the reach, or deploy fibre-optic links with PoE media converters at each end.
PoE vs Separate Power
| Feature | PoE | Separate Power |
|---|---|---|
| Cabling | One cable (data + power) | Two cables (data + power) |
| Max Distance | 100 m (extendable) | Varies |
| Remote Reboot | Yes (port cycling) | No |
| Cost | Lower overall | Higher (extra cable + adapters) |
