Introduction

Structured cabling provides the organised, standards-based infrastructure that makes IP surveillance systems reliable and maintainable. Cutting corners on cabling leads to intermittent faults, signal degradation, and costly troubleshooting. Doing it right the first time saves money in the long run.

Cable Types and Standards

Cat 6 UTP is the recommended standard for new CCTV installations. It supports Gigabit speeds at up to 100 m and provides better shielding and future-proofing than Cat 5e. For outdoor runs, use UV-resistant or gel-filled cable rated for direct burial or conduit installation.

Structured Cabling Components

A complete structured cabling system includes horizontal cables from cameras to patch panels, patch panels mounted in network racks, short patch leads connecting panels to switches, cable trays and conduit for physical protection, and clear labelling at both ends of every run.

Installation Best Practices

Maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the cable manufacturer. Never exceed the maximum pulling tension. Keep data cables at least 300 mm from power lines to avoid electromagnetic interference. Test every cable with a certified cable tester before commissioning.

Documentation

Create an as-built cable schedule documenting every run: camera name, cable number, patch panel port, switch port, and cable length. This documentation is invaluable for troubleshooting and future modifications.
