Introduction
Every surveillance system needs a recorder to store and manage footage. The two main options—Network Video Recorders (NVR) and Digital Video Recorders (DVR)—serve the same purpose but work with different camera technologies. This guide explains the differences so you can choose wisely.
What Is a DVR?
A DVR receives analog video signals from HD-TVI, AHD, or CVBS cameras over coaxial cable. It converts (digitises) the signal internally and stores it on built-in hard drives. DVRs are typically available in 4, 8, and 16-channel configurations.
What Is an NVR?
An NVR records video that has already been digitised by IP cameras and transmitted over an Ethernet network. Because the heavy processing happens at the camera, NVRs can handle higher resolutions and more advanced analytics. Many NVRs include built-in PoE ports for simplified wiring.
Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | DVR | NVR |
|---|---|---|
| Camera Type | Analog / HD-TVI | IP Cameras |
| Cabling | Coaxial | Ethernet (Cat 5e/6) |
| Max Resolution | 8 MP | 32 MP |
| PoE Support | No | Yes (built-in on many models) |
| Audio | Separate audio cables | Audio over same cable |
| Remote Access | Yes (via Hik-Connect) | Yes (via Hik-Connect) |
| Smart Features | Basic | AcuSense, face detection, line crossing |
When to Choose a DVR
A DVR is the right fit when you are upgrading an older coax-based system and want to keep existing cables, when the budget is tight and you need a proven economical solution, or for small installations (homes, small shops) where advanced analytics are not required.
When to Choose an NVR
Choose an NVR for new installations that need future-proof scalability, projects requiring resolutions above 5 MP or AI-based analytics, sites where a single PoE cable per camera simplifies installation, and enterprise environments demanding centralised management.
Hybrid Recorders: The Best of Both
Hikvision’s Turbo HD DVRs can accept both analog and IP camera inputs, allowing a phased migration from analog to IP without replacing the entire system at once. This is an excellent middle-ground for budget-conscious upgrades.
FastEgy Recommendation
For new projects we recommend NVRs with PoE for their simplicity and power. For retrofits, Hikvision’s Turbo HD hybrid recorders offer the smoothest upgrade path. Reach out to FastEgy for help sizing the right recorder for your project.
