Cat 5e vs Cat 6

Cat 5e supports Gigabit Ethernet up to 100 m and is sufficient for most CCTV installations. Cat 6 offers better shielding and headroom for higher bandwidth, making it a smarter choice for future-proofing—especially in commercial environments where the cables will be in place for years.

Outdoor Cabling

For outdoor runs, use UV-resistant, gel-filled, or direct-burial-rated cable. In Egypt’s heat, standard indoor PVC jackets degrade quickly in direct sunlight. Conduit or trunking provides additional physical protection from weather and rodents.

Cable Run Best Practices

Keep Ethernet cable runs under 90 m (allowing 10 m for patch leads). Avoid running data cables parallel to power lines to prevent electromagnetic interference. Use cable testers to verify connectivity before mounting cameras. Label every cable at both ends.

Patch Panels and Racks

For installations with more than 8 cameras, terminate cables at a patch panel in a network rack. This organises connections, simplifies troubleshooting, and allows easy camera moves without re-pulling cable.

Fibre Optic for Long Distances

When cable runs exceed 100 m—common in campus and industrial environments—use single-mode fibre optic with media converters. Fibre is immune to electromagnetic interference and supports runs of several kilometres.
