Introduction
Night-time is when most security incidents occur. Getting the best possible night vision from your cameras—whether IR, ColorVu, or DarkFighter—requires proper camera selection, correct installation, and environmental optimisation.
Choose the Right Technology
IR cameras are best for long-range covert monitoring. ColorVu cameras provide full-colour footage in near-darkness using supplemental white LEDs. DarkFighter cameras achieve colour images in ultra-low light without visible LEDs. Match the technology to your site’s lighting and operational requirements.
Optimise Camera Placement
Mount cameras where supplemental light (street lamps, building lights) illuminates the scene from behind the camera, not towards it. Avoid pointing cameras directly at bright light sources, which cause glare and wash out the image.
Eliminate IR Reflection
The most common night-vision problem is IR light reflecting off nearby surfaces. Keep cameras away from walls, overhangs, and glass. Trim vegetation near the camera. Ensure the dome housing’s foam ring is seated correctly to prevent internal reflection.
Supplemental Lighting
For areas where camera-based illumination is insufficient, install external IR or white-light illuminators. These extend the effective night-vision range well beyond the camera’s built-in LEDs and can be positioned independently for optimal coverage.
FastEgy Recommendation
FastEgy’s installation teams optimise every camera for night performance during setup. If your existing cameras deliver poor night footage, we can assess and improve your night-vision coverage. Contact us for a night-vision audit.
