Introduction
Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) is a camera feature that balances extreme differences between bright and dark areas within the same scene. In entrances with bright sunlight outside and dim lighting inside, a standard camera would either overexpose the bright area or underexpose the dark one. WDR solves this.
How WDR Works
WDR cameras capture multiple exposures of the same frame—one optimised for bright regions and another for dark regions—then combine them into a single balanced image. The result is clear detail in both the sunlit doorway and the shaded interior simultaneously.
When You Need WDR
WDR is essential at building entrances, glass storefronts, loading docks, toll booths, and any location where the camera faces a strong light source. In Egypt, where sunlight is intense, WDR is particularly valuable for exterior-facing cameras.
WDR Ratings
WDR performance is measured in decibels (dB). A rating of 120 dB is considered true WDR and handles most challenging lighting conditions. Hikvision’s professional-series cameras offer 120 dB or higher WDR across the range.
Digital WDR vs True WDR
Budget cameras sometimes advertise "digital WDR," which uses software processing rather than multiple exposures. True (hardware) WDR produces significantly better results and is recommended for any serious installation.
FastEgy Recommendation
We include true WDR cameras at every entrance point in our installations. If your current cameras produce washed-out footage at doorways, upgrading to WDR models is a quick and impactful improvement. Contact FastEgy for recommendations.
